Hands-On Food Team
Each Wednesday & Thursday from 4pm...
Each Thursday from 4.00pm we work with young people from local schools in our cafe kitchen. The youth prepare a plant-based evening meal, ready to serve to cafe guests from 6pm. Beyond learning how to prepare nutritious meals, the team really enjoys plating up and serving the dinner guests as they arrive. The students also produce - carob chocolate bars, sauerkraut and macaruffles. See our Hands-On Production Tab.
This year we are also planning some field trips to local food producers.
If you are between 12 and 19 and interested in cooking contact us, email naomi@handsonfood.nz or phone 06 328 5917. This program is also supported by local business and organisations who engage the Hands-On Food team to cater their function or event (groups from 10 up to 40).
If your business or organisation would like healthy catering served by a fun and enthusiastic team, call us on 06 328-5917 or email contact@wholegrainorganics.co.nz

Food Technology
We have a qualified technology teacher...
We have a qualified technology teacher in our kitchen team, who, with the support of the whole team and using the quality equipment and ingredients from our production kitchen and bakery, runs Food Technology courses - both at schools, and in our commercial cafe kitchen. Our daily business of researching, producing and marketing high quality food exemplifies the NZ technology school curriculum in action. We wish to involve young people who are interested in the whole cycle from identifying a need, preparing and producing quality food, through to the processes of marketing and selling that same food.
We call this program Hands-On Food. The partnership of Hands-On Food with schools achieves connecting a participant, and their education, with their wider community. It also supports schools achieve Food Technology outcomes. This community involvement can help participants find purpose in their learning, which will ideally transfer to other aspects of their education.
The 2017/2018 timetable is quite full already, however we do have room for year 11/12/13 students to join our senior Food Technology class, currently on a Monday morning. Please contact us to discuss further if this interests you.

Alternatively, we can also offer cooking-for-credits workshops aligning with various Achievement Standards, or Service IQ hospitality standards, in cooperation with the school.
